DJ Suprema One

http://www.myspace.com/djsupremaone

1. How long have you been djing and what inspired you to start?

I have been spinning for 8 years now. I started by accident. Now understand I had been playing guitar since I was like 12 and played some bari sax, alto, viola and keys, so it wasn't like I didn't have a leg up or nothing. I definitely understood the musical mathematics to mixing. So I was kicking it at the old Darkleaf house off like Crenshaw and the 10 fwy. My girl Petal was there Longevity, Kemit, Akhmed, Jahlee, and of course Mixmaster Wolf (who set this whole thing off). These dudes had a beat going on the MPC and there was a turntable hooked up to a realistic mixer. I had been watching Wolf scratch for many a days by then and decided to play a trick on him. So I (in all my inebriated glory) walked up to the decks and said "Yo Wolf I haven't told ya man but I been for watching you scratch and man, you all right, but um on the real I been a Dj for a smooth minute.

Peep it - Then I got up and proceeded to scratch like a madwoman. (Ya know, like when you play a video game and go buckwild on all the buttons and end up doing damn good). So I was scratching away like a fool and I stopped and turned around and they were BUYING IT! Everyone thought I was pretty good. Hahahaha! So Wolf kept encouraging me to spin, saying it was my fate. We went record shopping, I bought Gabereals old decks off him and I played Female o'Soul a month later (after practicing like an freaking Olympian). I've  really been blessed, no doubt. How it all went down was a serendipitous adventure.

2. What do you think makes a good DJ?

What I believe makes a good DJ is respecting the key that your songs are in. Some feel that if the BPM matches go ahead and mix it in. Cool if you are going to scratch it in and its time for a change up in the flow and your next record is hot to def. But it drive's me bananas when the integrity of a song is compromised with some excruciating off key blend, bananas!! I like folks who are musical with it. I don't care if you're the truth when it comes to scratching. You may as well be scratching your ass if it sounds bad.

3. With the qualities stated in Question 2, who do you think is a good
DJ?

Yo, I got to give it up to my man DJ DUSK Rest in Peace. Dusk was my favorite DJ he had the sickest and tightest blends with live drummers, his selection was infinite and fresh. Mr. Choc, DJ Revolution are favorites of mine. Mr Choc is the hardest working DJ I ever known and I learned a lot from him. He and Rev are so perfect its ridiculous ( I don't think I ever told dudes this). Revolution is on some other level when it comes to execution and plays the hardest shit! Shout out to the Wake Up Show!!!

Of course Mixmaster Wolfie Wolf (of Breakestra fame) who taught me about records I had no idea about and never would know about if it not for him. Big Ups Wolf! There are so many DJ's I got mad respect for and I have learned from that we could be here all day. Counterstryke, Icy Ice, Melo D (actually all the junkies), Mark Luv, C Los, Gabereal. All these dudes are dope as f#@%.

4. What's the most memorable experience in your DJ career?

One was opening up for Jam Master Jay at the Roxy in N.Y. before the DMC Battles. It was 2 months before he passed. I had just been on a 48 city Warped Tour and getting to play that show was like the cherry on top after a nice roll of gigs. I am so blessed to have had that opportunity to meet and play with a legend before he passed. Rest in Peace Jam Master Jay.

5. What advice do you give to new DJs that are pursuing a successful
career like yours that you wish you had received when starting out?

I hate this question. Move to the wilderness, make sure you can be as loud as you need, be careful who you bring to your crib and check your people if they roll deep, don't play trance it's for pussy's, keep your job as an accountant, be able to get out of a record with out an echo machine hahaha! How about, bring your 6'7' homie with dreads to clubs to collect your money (Shout out to Dueler Oner!!!), Don't wear white platforms they're trashy, Bend your knees and breath - don't faint!

6. What are you currently working on?

I am working on tracks for my artist Gia Khaleel. It's a beautiful process, one that has taken me a while to prepare for. She is the truth! I met her when I was spinning at Medusa's club. I was playing some tracks for the emcees and I wasn't paying to much attention. All of a sudden I hear this Jamaican girl busting with her brother and I was in shock because when you really hear true f%$#ing talent as a DJ you remember what it is all about. So yeah, we're Ominous Sound. Come to my page and listen to my homegirl spit fiyah. Other than that I am working on a new mixtape and will also be releasing bi-monthly club mixes starting in October.

7. When can they see you live? What clubs coming up?

If you are in Mexico City I have back to back shows coming up Oct 6-12. I am playing  Queens Corner for Lisa J's birthday (SHOUT OUT LISA J!) which takes place at Sonido @ the Little Temple Bar on Sept 24th, and details about my new club SWANK will be up soon. http://www.myspace.com/djsupremaone

8. Tell us about your local music scene. Who are the top local artists?

L.A. is cool in that you can basically go out every night and hear some good music. I go to some Jazz nights like Guys on Sundays or even go Salsa dancing on the pier, ya know whatever strikes a DJ's fancy;-) For real though L.A. has a dope scene I went to see Tribe Called Quest the other night and that crowd was HYPE!! Local artists I like…. I mean it is Hollywood so I could like name whoever but I am really feeling this OH NO album that ish is sick! I am feeling Bishop Lamont,  Madlib,  Procussions and Deux Process, Olmeca, anything Dj Quik does. Let me just say that Invincible from Detroit is the hardest female emcee period!! Oh Jean Grae and Invincible. Them are my girls! They ain't local but I love em!

9. What is a song that you hate to love ? (guilty pleasure)

"It ain't no fun" (Snoop & Nate Dogg)  I mean c'mon they are really on some treat a woman like a bitch ish, which is hella wack to me. However, musically I consider the voice like another instrument ( Note* don't try to write me about this with some regurgitated bell hooks speech, I know bitches!) and it is such a dope song. I have to just ……………….……shake my ass!

10. As a street marketing professional on the promotion side of the
music industry, what suggestions do you have for independent or new
artists in creating a buzz for themselves? And how can they get to you?

They can pick me up in a Rolls Royce with three soccer players and feed me grapes. Just playing! Well I listen to everything that comes my way so holla at your girl. Mp3 me at djsuprema1@gmail.com.

11. What is the most biggest obstacle you have had to overcome?

Finding a good record boy who doesn't leave the club with some hussy so I have to carry all them damn records. Now I have Serato.

12. Who were your influences growing up?

Madonna, Celia Cruz, Chavela Vargas,Tracy Ullman, Celio Gonzalez , Sonora Mantancera,  Lucille Ball, Jimi Hendrix, Elizabeth Taylor, Rudolph Nureyev, Maria Tallchief, Rita Moreno, Perez Prado and My Dad!!! My best friend!

13.
Who would you like to share the stage with? Who have you shared the
stage with?

I would like to share the stage with Lauren Hill, I would love to be Madonna's DJ. I would love to open for Gnarls Barkley. I would like to collaborate with Santana someday. As I continue on as a producer I feel that more than sharing a stage I would like to work with different people. I want to work with DR. DRE.

14. Websites?

It is being built by a very slow and methodical man in India. Hahaha…coming soon, real soon.

15. What else do you do besides DJ? And what are your typical working
hours?

I am a fulltime Political Science/Spanish major transferring to UCLA next fall. That takes a lot of time and dedication. Luckily I have attained balance, I'm loving it, it all blends perfectly. I am writing/illustrating a comic book series and am introducing the characters on my next mixtapes. So my tapes may not be all YO YO YO!!!!! I GOT A NEW TAPE OUT EVERY 48 HOURS!!!  But I am too much of a nerd to be so prolific. I get carried away and end up with an epic project. I typically Practice and draw at home Mon, Wed, and Fri. and I go to school on Tues and Thurs. I finish all my homework at school so I can do my thing at the crib. I don't have an actual day job…………………….. Sometimes I consider it.

16. What has your experience on MySpace been like so far? How did you
first heard of MySpace? Is there anyone or group of people that you
would like to re-connect with? If so, who?

Man, I've been on this thing since the beginning. In like 2003 I think? I will have to look at my old profile. I really couldn't tell you how I found out about it. All I know is all my people got on it and so I did (and yes I'd jump off the damn bridge too). I had a lot of fun learning how to freak the page. I remember when Tom had the time to write back, he must have been going nuts. I remember thinking this kid is coming up like a mugggg! I have had great experiences on it. I have booked mad gigs and met amazing people. I am going to meet my homeboy this winter! I ran into my old boyfriend from High School who is now a mens suit designer doing it BIG in San Francisco and I guess he kept growing after I knew him and now he is 6'7" !!!!! Craaazy! I actually would like to find my old friend Angie Schafer so if that's you HOLLLLLAAAAAAAAH!

DJ Mesta - Bum Squad Djs - Italy

www.myspace.com/djmesta

1. How long have you been djing and what inspired you to start?

It's roughly 15 years now. The inspiration came from the first B Boy movies.

I started as a B Boy at first & then moved to djing.

I just got caught up with that turntable fascination.

After watching Flash on videos & all the other old school djs,

I got to give it up to JMJ who was the first US DJ I got to see live.

And then Kid Capri later on who inspired me heavy on the mixtapes,

him being half Italian. you know?!

2. What do you think makes a good DJ?

Originality as number 1. Breaking records ..and even trends!

Being able to communicate, wether it's done with hands, voice, body language etc..Remembering you always spin for the people, wether it's mixtapes, clubs, radio, beats etc.

Then depends on your specialty.

Personally, I like the well round DJ.. the 360° figure.

3. With the qualities stated in Question 2, who do you think is a good DJ?

After all these years, Tony Touch is one of my fav right now.

4. What's the most memorable experience in your DJ career?

Wow.. so many.. getting laid by 2 women at once and not even just once!

Seriously, for me the best is always good sex after a good club night.

Unlike what people think, it doesn't come that often as DJs are usually the last ones to leave the club...

and all the girls are gone!

Also, I love the travelling part, experiencing new places, new people...

5. What advice do you give to new djs that are pursuing a successful career like yours that you wish you had received when starting out?

Be humble & believe in yourself. It's hard, real hard.

Like with anything in life, you need to firmly believe in what you doing.

It seems so simple to say..

6. What are you currently working on?

Lots of Remixes.. I'm trying to blow up a new Reggaeton/HipHop sound.

Holla if you need beats.

7.When can they see you live? What clubs coming up?

I got the residencies in my city Torino here in Italy, most of them launching these days.

Internationally, I'll be @ China White in London on November 14th.

Also, check me out on iTunes.. I got more stuff coming there within a few weeks.

8. Tell us about your local music scene. Who are the top local artists?

I feel the scene is really behind, but doors are opening as Fabri Fibra just came out and smashed the charts overhere.. that's a good look.

One of my all time fav in Italy is Esa, with lots of hit singles under his belt.

We just did an Italian Reggaeton joint together, "Salta A Bordo".

9. What is a song that you hate to love ? (guilty pleasure)

Maybe some Soca party tracks & all the ethnic stuff, but I'm not ashamed like that!

I tell you the ones I love to hate, all the mainstream joints

I have to play every single night I DJ.. I hate to play them over and over,

but at the end of the day that's what people want.. most people anyway.

10. As a street marketing professional on the promotion side of the music industry, what suggestions do you have for independent or new artists in creating a buzz for themselves? And how can they get to you?

Try to be professional & listen and make treasure when somebody in the industry give youhonest negative feedback. I'm available on www.djmesta.com always & I do try my best to check out as much stuff as possible.

11. What is the most biggest obstacle you have had to overcome?

Ignorance. And lack of vision from the people who run things.

12. Who were your influences growing up?

Without a doubt, Dj Premier and Marley Marl.

13. Who would you like to share the stage with? Who have you shared the stage with?

The Roots is one of the first big groups I shared a stage with & one of the best acts I ever got to see live.

Daddy Yankee would be the one now.

14. Websites?

www.djmesta.com
www.myspace.com/djmesta

And www.mp3mixtape.com  where I'm pioneeiring the digital mixtape, meaning I really make it official.

Since we doing this interview in a "space" that changed a lot of things, let me tell you I'm a mixtape dj at heart.

And I always hated the way under the laws our artistry can be seen as illegal practice..

So I launched www.mp3mixtape.com  where we release new joints through "official" mixtapes

and make them available on iTunes and all main digital stores worldwide. That's some next shit!

15. What else do you do besides DJ? And what are your typical working hours?

There's no working hours. Once I'm up, it's on.. 11.30am to 5.30am is my usual day. Beside DJ, I produce music & do everything else that takes to be a DJ. I don't know if it's good or bad but I find it hard to share the DJ from the inner self. If I have extra time and it's not sex, I go to swim, bike, movies, shopping and all the usual human stuff.

16.  What has your experience on MySpace been like so far? How did you first heard of MySpace? Is there anyone or group of people that you would like to re-connect with? If so, who?

I never give props if I don't feel you deserve it.

That said, MySpace is crazy.. the funny thing I'm actually meeting new people & do real business.

Plus I'm catching up with old friends I met throughout the world, that surprised me at first. Now I feel the whole hip hop world is on MySpace, & trust me ..the djs did a good job in spreading the word!!

People is getting it now, but you'll realize in a few years how crazy it really is.

MySpace is changing things.. Doing this interview, this is how I feel:

I grow up reading The Source which was once considered the bible of Hip Hop.

To me, doing this interview today is like doing it for The Source some years back.

That's how big MySpace is.. and I know it will get bigger, it's just so "now"

and everything else feel so behind.

DJ Presto (Concrete Grooves)

Presto

www.myspace.com/prestojazz

1. How long have you been djing and what inspired you to start?

-I've been DJing since 1991...I always did pause mixes on the tape deck back in the day...then when i finally got a couple belt drive turntables i started with that...after a while i finally was able to get one 1200 so i would do my mixtapes with one side only with pitch control and the other side had no pitch so i would have to plan my mixes ahead of time to know which record would get the pitch control...I would make mixtapes like that and sell them at my high school...DJing was almost like a bridge for me to get into music production because i never had anyone teaching me music or anything so i had to just find a channel to get the music out of me...as far as DJing, I'm  not a battle DJ but more of a club DJ, meaning basic scratches and good music selections and blends...

2. What do you think makes a good DJ?

-I think first of all a DJ has to have a good ear and know  how to keep a crowds attention and read the vibe of the crowd...no matter what kind of music or whether you are a club  DJ or a battle DJ you have to know how to do that...I think music selection is important and also knowing how to keep things on key...a lot of DJ's will mix records in that are off key sometimes and that can sound real bad...

3. With the qualities stated in Question 2, who do you think is a good DJ?

-one of my favorite DJ's is DJ Premier...being that I am a producer i definitely feel his production style scratching on his beats...its never too much and never too little...always in the pocket...as far as his mixing on his tapes he always keeps the vibe and energy going...

4. What's the most memorable experience in your DJ career?

-I remember a long time ago I DJed with Rob One at my friend Bleek's bbq in the valley...I think it was 1997...it was so hot out there that when we would put a record down on the turntable we couldnt leave it on for more than 30 seconds cuz the sun would instantly warp the record...there was just enough time to barely play 1 verse from each song before the sun would melt the record...that went on all day...

5. What advice do you give to new djs that are pursuing a successful career like yours that you wish you had received when starting out?

-I would say my main career is as a producer now but I still DJ in support of my new albums i have coming out, etc...if you are looking to get into production eventually then pay attention to song structure when you DJ as far as verse, chorus, etc...because if you decide to get into production later that knowledge will help you in making beats when you are sequencing...

6. What are you currently working on?

-I currently have a new album out called "Magic LP" which is on my label Concrete Grooves.  It is all my production and features guest appearances by Raashan Ahmad of Crown City Rockers, Mr. J Medeiros of The Procussions, Kim Hill, IN-Q, DJ Dusk, Sach, 3rd Khind, and more...

7.When can they see you live? What clubs coming up?

-I'm playing at Soul Sessions at The Grand Star in Chinatown, L.A. this Friday 8/25

8. Tell us about your local music scene. Who are the top local artists?

-as far as the L.A. scene there are a lot of artists doing a lot of things in hip hop on different labels...there are labels like Concrete Grooves, Sound In Color, Up Above, Kajmere, Plug Research, LA 2 The Bay, Illasophic,Sebadukes, Stones Throw, Tres, Operation Unknown, and many others...

9. What is a song that you hate to love ? (guilty pleasure)

-I don't know...I can't think of one right now...

10. As a street marketing professional on the promotion side of the music industry, what suggestions do you have for independent or new artists in creating a buzz for themselves? And how can they get to you?

-if you are a producer or artist you should try to get your sounds out to people through promo...try to press some limited vinyl with your tracks on it and get it out to people...get your name out there as much as possible, and DJ's are the ones that can push your name...people are more likely going to listen to a 12" of somebody they've never heard of than a CD...same thing when you're selling it...also use your Myspace profile in conjunction with that...

11. What is the most biggest obstacle you have had to overcome?

-I've been climbing hills since day 1 in this...I'm still trying to overcome obstacles now...It's been hard being the artist and on the business side...it is very rarely that people do that...I have friends helping me out like my friend Charles Yao who helps with my marketing and events for CG...we hold it down like that over here and keep pushing...I want to also start shopping my beats to artists outside of my role with Concrete Grooves...

12. Who were your influences growing up?

-my influences growing up and now are Pete Rock, DJ Premier, J Dilla aka Jay Dee, Q-Tip, and DJ Smash to name a few...

13. Who would you like to share the stage with? Who have you shared the stage with?

-I would like to do a tour with my hip hop fusion band Wayward Saints in Japan and Europe...maybe play some shows with some hip hop groups and maybe some jazz acts...I went on a Japan tour last year for 2 weeks to 5 cities and DJed which was cool...

14. Websites?
www.myspace.com/concretegrooves

15. What else do you do besides DJ? And what are your typical working hours?

I am a producer mainly, I also play the keys in my hip hop fusion band Wayward Saints...working hours change all the time...I'm always working in the daytime and then usually making music at night...

16.  What has your experience on MySpace been like so far? How did you first heard of MySpace? Is there anyone or group of people that you would like to re-connect with? If so, who?

-my experience on Myspace has been great...I heard about Myspace from a friend of mine back in 2003 and I've been on here ever since...its been great for marketing my music and making new connections in the music industry.

DJ Echo (Skam Artists / Power 106 )

DJ Echo

www.myspace.com/djecho

1. How long have you been djing and what inspired you to start?

10 years. Always wanted to be a DJ, but it wasn't until 10 years ago that I got the tools......Music is my inspiration

2. What do you think makes a good DJ?

Originality, Creativity, willingness to take risks........"Don't be scared bro!" <<

3. With the qualities stated in Question 2, who do you think is a good DJ?

Everybody is, silly!!!

4. What's the most memorable experience in your DJ career?

One of my most memorable experiences took place last year, I had the pleasure of Djing in South America....Bogota, Colombia to be exact. It was the yearly hip hop festival "Hip Hop al Parque" and their was 26,000 people there rocking in the pouring rain while I was djing....no one left, I have it on video....it was crazy! My lil' bros Syphe & D-lux were there too.

5. What advice do you give to new djs that are pursuing a successful career like yours that you wish you had received when starting out?

Stay focused, be original, be creative, be PATIENT, meet as many people as you can and whatever you do, do not turn into "The Mad DJ".

6. What are you currently working on?

Just finished a mix cd, about to start another one......and a couple other things I can't speak on yet.

7.When can they see you live? What clubs coming up?

Monday's at FFFK Monday's(formerly Snatch), Wednesday's Les Duex, both of those in Hollywood, Friday's at Sutra in Orange County and Saturday's at Rum Jungle in Las Vegas....oh, and on-air 105.9 Power 106 FM when I'm in town.

8. Tell us about your local music scene. Who are the top local artists?

I plead the fif!

9. What is a song that you hate to love ? (guilty pleasure)

Has to be every DJ's(that plays it)....Kelly Clarkson "Since you've been gone"

10. As a street marketing professional on the promotion side of the music industry, what suggestions do you have for independent or new artists in creating a buzz for themselves? And how can they get to you?

Same advice as I would give DJs....but my main point would be don't be scared to be different. It's so easy to do something someone else has done but if you take that route you won't be remembered for it. Also, focus on becoming a Hit Artist and not just making a Hit Record.

11. What is the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome?

Learning how to smile 24/7....still working on it.

12. Who were your influences growing up?

My pops along with a handful of successful entrepreneurs.

13. Who would you like to share the stage with? Who have you shared the stage with?

Vice and I used to do a 4 turntable tour back in 2001, it would be sick to bring that back.

14. Websites?

www.power106.fm

www.myspace.com/djecho

www.djecho.net

www.hollaboyz.com

15. What else do you do besides DJ? And what are your typical working hours?

DJ....sun down to sun up

16.  What has your experience on MySpace been like so far? How did you first hear of MySpace? Is there anyone or group of people that you would like to re-connect with? If so, who?

I love myspace, it's just as dope as when email and Serato was invented.

When Vice showed me what it was I was immediately hooked cuz it's a great promotion/communication tool. A lot of people I went to high school with are on myspace which is cool, I'm just waiting for the girl I had a crush on(that wouldn't give me the time of day) to give me the time of day on myspace.

DJ Rush (Bum Squad DJs)

DJ Rush

http://www.myspace.com/djrushonline

1. How long have you been djing and what inspired you to start?

I've been djin since 98, my freshman year of high school. But around 2001 I really got into the whole scene and worked on tryin to make a living djing.

2. What do you think makes a good DJ?

Wow...lets see.. A good DJ should always be prepared! You have to be able to rock any type of crowd! If you are rockin a party you should be able to read the crowd and satisfy 99% of the people there! Be able to play a little bit of 80s, a little bit of Rock, some House. You cant just play Hip Hop or House all night long unless you are doing a club that is focused on House music ONLY or HipHop ONLY.

3. With the qualities stated in Question 2, who do you think is a good DJ?

I AM!!! haha... There is a lot of good DJs out there. Some of my favorites are: AM, Kid Capri, Vice, Revolution, Z-Trip, Mark Ronson, Bad Boy Bill, Paul Oakenfold.

4. What's the most memorable experience in your DJ career?

BEING ON RADIO!!... How many kids get to be on radio right out of high school?? I will never forget that experience. It gave me a lot of motivation and self confidence! I DJed at KKUU in Palm Springs, CA. It was a small market HipHop and r&b station and that was my stepping stone!

5. What advice do you give to new djs that are pursuing a successful career like yours that you wish you had received when starting out?

I would say DONT BURN ANY BRIDGES! Work HARD! IF you want to make it happen, YOU CAN! You always have to hustle. Go out and network! The more people you know, the better it is in this business!

6. What are you currently working on?

A few mixtapes in the works. The one im most excited about is this HipHop 80s Rock 70 min party cd I will start working on soon!

7.When can they see you live? What clubs coming up?

I am always doing clubs everywhere. Just check my myspace page for dates!

8. Tell us about your local music scene. Who are the top local artists?

I would say this crew Homeless Nation staright out of the Inland Empire, they are really making some noise right now!

9. What is a song that you hate to love ? (guilty pleasure)

girl shake that laffy taffy! haha jk..

10. As a street marketing professional on the promotion side of the music industry, what suggestions do you have for independent or new artists in creating a buzz for themselves? And how can they get to you?

1st of all you got to record your sh*t in a full studio and not you mama's garage. Then make sure you are makin hits, then jus hustle! go out and make connections. Go to the clubs that you know your local radio station is gonna be at and just buy em a drink and meet them and build relationships, and if your music is hot, its gonna get passed on the MD or APD at the station and it will have a chance at radio play!

11. What is the most biggest obstacle you have had to overcome?

I started DJing young, It was hard getting club promoters to pay any attention to a young kid trying to come up. Getting gigs or even gettin into a club was hard for me! So that was my biggest obstacle.

12. Who were your influences growing up?

Definitly my boys Delvin, Swiff, & 4Real. Artists that influenced me was Wu Tang, Guns n Roses, Biggie & Pac!

13. Who would you like to share the stage with? Who have you shared the stage with?

U2!! haha imagine that!.sunnday bloody sunndayy! how many people do you think go for a U2 show?.. I have been blessed to do shows with a lot of talented artists and djs. 2 of the dopest would have to be SNOOP Dogg & Busta Rhymes!

14. Websites?

My website is being re-done right now! www.djrushonline.com if it isn't up yet. you can check out my myspace page. www.myspace.com/djrushonline

15. What else do you do besides DJ? And what are your typical working hours?

DJ OB1 (Skam Artists)

DeeJayOB1

www.myspace.com/deejayob1

1. How long have you been djing and what inspired you to start?

-i've been dj'ing for about 10 years now. i've always been interested in it since i was was kid. i really never had the means to start until i was older though. i actually started out in the "rave" world as a party goer & then decided i wanted to be the one behind the music, making people move.

2. What do you think makes a good DJ?

-i think it's a combination of things actually: being able to read a crowd, music selection, mixing skills, & even mic work in some instances

3. With the qualities stated in Question 2, who do you think is a good DJ?

-thats hard to narrow it down to few because there are so many, but i always have to ride with my fellow Abe Froman Showmen to start. truthfully, if i'm out at a club, i enjoy when they're playing. in a more underground setting, i enjoy Shadow, Krush, & Spinna to name a few. it really depends on what environment i'm in.

4. What's the most memorable experience in your DJ career?

-there's quite a few, but two specifically come to mind....dj'ing with Jam Master Jay for a New Years party & also playing with my favorite dj of all time, Jazzy Jeff

5. What advice do you give to new djs that are pursuing a successful career like yours that you wish you had received when starting out?

-be patient & put in the time...it will pay off

6. What are you currently working on?

-nothing major really right now besides traveling & my normal vegas gigs...a few mashups/blends here & there

7.When can they see you live? What clubs coming up?

-well, i play in vegas 5-6 nights a week as well as do radio & travel. out of town i have lotus & stereo in nyc, pussycat lounge in phoenix/scottsdale, & borgata in atlantic city coming up

8. Tell us about your local music scene. Who are the top local artists?

-as i'm sure is pretty apparent, vegas has become the mecca for clubs within the past few years so the scene for the dj world is very good & busy. vegas has alot of good talent, too many to single out

9. What is a song that you hate to love ? (guilty pleasure) -honestly, i'm not a big fan of alot of the music i have to play, but lets face it, in our line of work we don't have a choice but to play certain stuff. on that note, umm, justin timberlake "sexyback"...haha, i just like the beat, i swear

10. As a street marketing professional on the promotion side of the music industry, what suggestions do you have for independent or new artists in creating a buzz for themselves? And how can they get to you?

-just get your material out there to wherever & whomever you can.....if it's decent it will speak for itself. obviously i can be reached on myspace!!!

11. What is the most biggest obstacle you have had to overcome?

-i also have been thaiboxing for almost 14 years now. i shattered my elbow in a fight & they told me i would never fight again, but i ended up coming back & fighting 2 years later

12. Who were your influences growing up?

-on the life side of things, obviously my parents, as well as my thaiboxing teacher. as far as dj'ing goes, Jazzy Jeff & some of my friends

13. Who would you like to share the stage with? Who have you shared the stage with?

-i'm a huge reggae fan so there's lots of reggae artists i would love to play with. memorable artists for me would be, as i mentioned earlier, Jam Master Jay & Jazzy Jeff

14. Websites?

15. What else do you do besides DJ? And what are your typical working hours?

-for work, this is it, just dj 24/7

16. What has your experience on MySpace been like so far? How did you first heard of MySpace? Is there anyone or group of people that you would like to re-connect with? If so, who?

-myspace has been a great experience...great marketing tool, easy to use & design your site, the list goes on & on. i got hooked the first time my friends showed it to me!!!

DJ Spinna

DJ Spinna

1. How long have you been djing and what inspired you to start?

I've been Djing for over twenty years now.  My biggest inspiration came
from watching local dj's do their thing at block parties in the streets
of Brooklyn back in the day.  I was also influenced heavily from
listening to people like Grandmaster Flash, Jam Master Jay and Jazzy
Jeff. NY radio dj's like Shep Pettibone, Latin Rascals, Tony Humphries,
Merlin Bob and John Morales made an impact on my mixing skill. Learning how to ride two records together was huge for me and is becoming a lost
art.

2. What do you think makes a good DJ?

Being a good well rounded dj is tricky. You have those that are focused
strictly on cutting, scratching and battle technique, then there's those
that are great mixers and selectors and can rock a crowd. For me the
most important thing is holding down your audience. Being able to tell a
story, creating peaks and lows during a party, versatility, and
entertaining the people are very important. I can't forget technicality.
Train wreck blends hurt my ears.

3. With the qualities stated in Question 2, who do you think is a good
DJ?

Wow, where do I start.
The ones that impressed me when I was coming up are Grandmaster Flash,
Red Alert, Clark Kent, Kid Capri, Jazzy Jeff, Jam Master Jay (RIP) Larry
Levan (RIP) Louie Vega, Timmy Regisford, Danny Krivit.

4. What's the most memorable experience in your DJ career?

One of my biggest moments is playing my first big gig in Tokyo in 1998. It was an eight hour gig. I had a huge hip hop following there at the time but
halfway through the party I started switching up my set. I went into
break beats, then funk, then disco, then house, jazz and beyond. As the
night progressed I went deeper musicallyand they went nuts. I didn't
leave the club until 8am.
I love Japan.

5. What advice do you give to new djs that are pursuing a successful
career like yours that you wish you had received when starting out?

Versatility is the key. When you play many styles of music your chances
of making more money increases. It also increases your fan base. I also
suggest paying attention to your crowd. If the floor is clear then
something is obviously wrong with what you're doing.

6. What are you currently working on?

My current projects are Jigmastas, Polyrhythm Addict and J-Live albums,
as well as various remixes and productions for other artists.

7. When can they see you live? What clubs coming up?

I'm currently promoting my latest album "Intergalactic Soul" due out June 27th on Shanachie/Papa/ Wonderwax records. You can check my upcoming events on my myspace page for updates.

8. Tell us about your local music scene. Who are the top local artists?

There's a huge independent soul music scene in NY at the moment. Artist
such as Tortured Soul, Heavy, Tricia Angus,  Eric Roberson, Lizz Fields,
Delouie Avant and Selan are major players of this scene and have also
collaborated with me on my latest album Intergalactic Soul. Other names
to look out for are Angela Johnson, Chris Rob, Maya Azucena, Martin
Luther, Soulive, St. Juste, Alison Crockett, Tamar Kali, Sara Devine and
Jeremy James. There's so many.

9. What is a song that you hate to love ?
 (guilty pleasure)

Just about any pop record that came out in the 80's that was played into the ground are potential love to hate records. Tracks like Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams" and "Everything She Wants" by Wham are examples but they always work. At the end of the day it's what works.

10. As a street marketing professional on the promotion side of the
music industry, what suggestions do you have for independent or new
artists in creating a buzz for themselves? And how can they get to you?

Get a Myspace account! Lol. Try to do as many shows as possible and of
course get your music pressed up on a cd and distributed by hand if you
have to.  They can get to me on myspace of course.

11. What is the most biggest obstacle you have had to overcome?

Every obstacle is a learning experience so I don't really see things as
obstacles. More as challenges. I'm still striving to get to a certain
level of success but I'm cool with the growth. I take everthing in
stride. I'm also having a hard time balancing family time with
travelling and work. Having a 2 year old daughter makes it even more
difficult.  What I do is all for her which makes the hard work more
meaningfull.

12. Who were your influences growing up?

Artists that influenced me are Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Kool and the
Gang, The Meters,Herbie Hancock, The Mizell Brothers, Quincy Jones, Kraftewerk, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Whodini, Boogie Down Productions, Marley Marl, Pete Rock, Premier, Larry Heard, Blaze, Masters At Work. Anyone that was funky,
soulfull, and innovative.

13. Who would you like to share the stage with? Who have you shared the
stage with?

I have played alongside some of the best in the business. Jazzy Jeff, Dj
Shadow and Cut Chemist, Masters At Work, Jazzanova, Gilles Peterson, Dj Scratch of EPMD, Francois K, so many. My dream is to play a Stevie
Wonder and/or Prince after party for a show or concert. I can hang up
the decks after that.

14. Websites?

DjSpinna.com
Myspace.com/DjSpinnafromBrooklyn

15. What else do you do besides DJ? And what are your typical working
hours?

I'm in the studio quite a bit. I usually start working early and wrap up
by 9pm.  Besides that I keep it simple on the day to day. Between djing
everywhere and studio work, any downtime is well spent just chilling.

16. What has your experience on MySpace been like so far? How did you
first heard of MySpace? Is there anyone or group of people that you
would like to re-connect with? If so, who

My experience has been fantastic. I wish I had time to listen to all the
artists, producers, fans, and dj's that hit me everyday. It's amazing to
see how many like minded people there are in the world and how they can
all be linked to each other in one place. I was receiving emails to join
myspace from friends for about a year before deciding to joint. I gave
in when I realised the level of artists that were part of it.
Reconnection with college friends would be cool. If you went to Suny
Binghamton between the years of 1989 and 1993, Vince aka Spinna is the
building.

DJay Rage

www.myspace.com/djayrage

1. How long have you been djing and what inspired you to start?

- I've been DJaying since 1992, but I practiced for a few years before I would even dare to call myself a DJ.

The main influences I had growing up in Chicago were the legendary "Hot Mix 5" on WBMX. They were amongst the first DJ's in the world to not only have a mixshow on a commercial radio station, but in my opinion they were the first to have a QUALITY mixshow on the air that defied genre's & boundaries of music. They played it all, as long as it was danceable. I remember going to a lot of house parties when WBMX was still on the air & instead of hiring a DJ or playing cassetes, everyone would just tune in to WBMX & dance the night away!

2. What do you think makes a good DJ?

- I think there are many qualities that define a good DJ, but it all boils down to his/her ability to make people have a fun, memorable, & outright good time. A good DJ should be able to read his/her audience & adapt to whatever situation he/she is placed in to achieve goal #1: rock his/her audience. At the end of the day popularity, technical ability or even musical selection simply do not matter if you can't get people off their butts & on the dance floor.

3. With the qualities stated in Question 2, who do you think is a good DJ?

- DJ Rob-Lo from NY is a good example. I've seen him spin in Chicago at various venues, and he always reads his audience & adapts to please them. Another excellent example is Julian "Jumpin" Perez from Chicago. He has been mixing for over two decades, and still is able to rock audiences regardless of their age or even taste in music. A lot of DJ's that have been mixing for a while become "comftorable" & simply choose to play what they want or are comftorable with & not follow musical trends, that is not the case with either Rob, Julian or to name a few others, Kid Capri, Skribbles, Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Jazzy Jeff, even scratchmaster Qbert has adapted his style over the years to follow trends, or set new ones.

4. What's the most memorable experience in your DJ career?

- Last summer I was mixing for Coca-Cola during the annual Puerto Rican festival & my parents paid me a surprise visit. It was the first time they had ever seen me performing in front of a large audience (there were 1000's of people there) and they were very impressed & proud of me. Its a very satasfying feeling to know that you've made your parents proud of you.

5. What advice do you give to new djs that are pursuing a successful career like yours that you wish you had received when starting out?

- Don't be scared to take chances. When I was starting out I was scared to try out new music or scratches/blends/remixes that my audience did not know. I feared that I would clear my dancefloor, but now I realize that it is my responsibility to expose my audience to new music & experiences. I'm no longer scared to try something new because I know that even if I clear my dancefloor I can always fill it right back up. Its good to follow & keep up with musical trends, but what can make you stand out is to not only follow trends, but set them as well.

6. What are you currently working on?

- I can tell ya, but then I'd have to kill ya!

Just kidding... I always have my plate full with various projects & endeavors. Some of the things I'm pretty much always working on is: constantly maintaining & updating my radio station with new music, mixes & shows; Sharing new music with the 100's of DJ's I network with every day; networking & helping out thousands of established/unestablished artists, producers, & DJ's daily (& introducing them all to each other); remixing/producing songs; hosting, throwing & promoting various events & parties throughout the midwest; & of course consistently dropping new mixes, podcasts & mixtapes.

7.When can they see you live? What clubs coming up?

- I'm at Jean's Lounge in Chicago (25th & California) every Wednesday night, but as far as weekends are concerned I gave up all my weekend residencies a few years ago & mainly use my weekends for my corporate/mobile events & my appearences out of town. Check out my Myspace page for my schedule (when I remember to put my events up).

8. Tell us about your local music scene. Who are the top local artists?

- There is a cornacopia of talent here in Chicago, the main problem or hinderence is one that plagues most major cities. Lack of cooperation. Most people are not willing to help anyone else out unless it benefits them somehow. That is why Atlanta & Houston has essentially taken over the rap industry the last few years because they are more willing to work with each other & help each other out. People simply need to realize that there is plenty of food on the table for everyone to eat, if we can all cook it together & sit at the same table peacefully.

9. What is a song that you hate to love ? (guilty pleasure)

- Peanut Butter Jelly Time...

LOL, nah I'd have to say Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P." After so many years its amazing how crazy people go for this song!

10. As a street marketing professional on the promotion side of the music industry, what suggestions do you have for independent or new artists in creating a buzz for themselves? And how can they get to you?

- There are so many tools out there now for anyone trying to network or promote themselves that it is exponentially easier to do so now, compared to just a few years ago. Myspace is an excellent example of one of those resources. There are many, many artists & groups that have been found & then signed to major & minor labels just from the buzz that they have managed to create through Myspace. Artists need to remember that they can have all the talent in the world, but its not going to get them anywhere if they are not willing to get out there & work hard to expose people to their talent(s). Pitbull is a good example of putting in work. Even though he is signed, he still goes out there & networks & works with new artists, drops mixtapes with various DJ's, has a really good street team, and does shows all over the country. He seems to understand that if you market to the "street" that will turn into demand from radio which in turn will turn into more sales. A lot of artists simply try & market directly to the radio, but in today's market you have to be willing to cater to the radio, clubs, streets & to a certain extent, even TV.

I'm really easy to contact, all my contact info is on all my websites, plus I tend to reach out to artists often.

11. What is the most biggest obstacle you have had to overcome?

- That would easily have to be capital. It was a lot harder back in the day to be able to afford the equipment to even get started, not to mention how much it costs to keep up with the latest hits of today & tomorrow. Now with advances in technology it is easily 10x easier to get started. Anyone can spend about $1,000 on some basic equipment & get started that way now.

It is still a huge financial burden to do what I do, but I consider it an honer & a priveledge to be able to do something I love everyday.

12. Who were your influences growing up?

- I was influenced by everything around me growing up, especially all the negative people around me. Where I grew up either you were a gangbanger or you were a "Hip Hopper" (breakdancer, tagger, Emcee or DJ). After watching a lot of my friends & relatives go the gangbanger route, & paying the consquences for it, I knew that was not an option for me. I ended up learning how to breakdance, turning my poems into lyrical poetry, painting all over Chicago, & of course evolving my love for music into DJ'aying.

13. Who would you like to share the stage with? Who have you shared the stage with?

- I would love to share the stage with KRS-1, J.U.I.C.E., Prime, Rhymefest, RZA, GZA, Method Man, Mad Skillz, De La Soul, Jurrasic 5 & a lot of other artists, but not only DJ'aying for them, being able to freestyle or perform with them would be quite humbling as well.

I've opened up for numerous Indy/unsigned artists in various genre's of music, but I tend to turn away mainstream shows. I'm not sure if its the artists themselves, or their managers/agents, but a lot of artists do not want you to do too good of a job if you are opening for them (that goes for DJ's as well). They are intimadated or scared that you will steal the show or spotlight out from under them.

15. What else do you do besides DJ? And what are your typical working hours?

- During the day (Mon. - Fri. 7am to 3pm) I work as Security Director for a building in downtown Chicago. There is about 3,000 people in the building at any given time during the day so that keeps me busy & out of trouble.

16. What has your experience on MySpace been like so far? How did you first heard of MySpace? Is there anyone or group of people that you would like to re-connect with? If so, who

- Myspace has been very helpfull & influential to my career. It has helped me locate & network with talented artists, producers & DJ's like never before.

I heard of Myspace from a lot of artists & DJ's that I was working with. They were always asking me "what's your Myspace page?" So I finally caved in & joined the community. I was instantly hooked.

I've already found a lot of old classmates & friends that I haven't spoken to in over a decade on Myspace (High School & Elementary School) but I would definitly like to find everyone else. Its interesting to see what path(s) their lives have taken after so many years.
